Cotton Trash is a good source of nutrition however, there are WHP restrictions associated with feeding. Once a property receives cotton trash their PIC is flagged with “Accessed Cotton Trash” (ACT) status. Cattle on an ACT property are automatically in a 60 day withhold, even if they have not been fed cotton trash.
Cattle purchased from an ACT property, onto a non-ACT property, remain in the withhold for 60 days – this commences from the date they are transferred onto the new PIC. The EIDs re flagged as being in the cotton trash WHP.
Scenario
Cattle purchased privately from ACT PIC. Buyer does not transfer straight away. 6 months later, buyer intends to send to saleyard. They complete transfer – which triggers the 60-day withhold. If the WHP is not declared (they don’t think it’s still applicable since >60 days since purchase), and cattle sold to slaughter, and realised partway through slaughtering the consignment – the plant goes into shutdown – HUGE cost.
If they realise this, they need to declare the WHP, they either accept a lower price at sale due to limited competition; or have to hold them until they’re out.
